Fake e-mails asking trademark proprietors to pay fees

March 26, 2026

by

The Patent Office of the Republic of Bulgaria informs all interested parties of the risk of receiving fraudulent emails and letters containing requests for payment of fees. These messages do not originate from the Office, although they are presented in the emails as official correspondence on behalf of the Office.

How to recognize that a correspondence is from the Patent Office?

Official electronic correspondence from the Patent Office is sent only from email addresses with the domain @bpo.bg. Messages sent from other domains should not be considered official. The Patent Office does not make requests for payment through emails containing payment links or bank account details other than those officially announced by the Office.

Recommended actions when receiving suspicious messages:

Check the information received only through the official channels of the Patent Office. Do not make payments and do not open links or attachments from suspicious messages.

We have notified all our clients not to make any payments. We have also published information about this practice on our social media channels so that more trademark owners can be informed in advance about these illegal practices.
