‘Bulgarsko kiselo mlуako’ is registered as a protected designation of origin (PDO) from Bulgaria and is included to the list of 1,641 already protected agricultural products.
Products with protected geographical indications are a type of intellectual property and therefore enjoy a particularly high degree of protection against misuse of the name, including through bilateral trade agreements between the EU and third countries.
Protected designations of origin designate products for which there is the closest causal link between the geographical area of production of the product, its inherent natural and human factors, and the quality and characteristics of the product in question.
In the case of “Bulgarsko kiselo mlуako”, the geographical area of production is the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria and the raw material used is Bulgarian milk – cow’s, sheep’s, buffalo, goat’s or mixed.
The registration application was sent by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to the European Commission in February 2021.
